Amazon MGM Studios is reportedly developing a movie based on the couple involved in laundering billions of dollars worth of Bitcoin connected to the 2016 hack of the cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex.
The film, titled “Razzlekhan,” will focus on the actions of Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan, who were dubbed “Bitcoin’s Bonnie and Clyde” in a 2022 New York Times article.
After the Bitfinex hack in August 2016, where approximately 119,754 BTC was stolen, Lichtenstein and Morgan laundered over 94,643 BTC through a series of small, complex transactions across multiple accounts and platforms.
The couple was arrested in February 2022, and as part of a deal with prosecutors in August 2023, Lichtenstein pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering, and Morgan pleaded guilty to money laundering conspiracy and conspiracy to defraud the United States.
The film aims to capture the dramatic events surrounding the couple’s involvement in the Bitcoin laundering scheme. While this project takes a dramatic approach, other studios have also explored covering figures in the crypto space through documentaries.
For instance, rumors circulated about a documentary on the relationship between former FTX CEO Sam “SBF” Bankman-Fried and former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao following the collapse of FTX in 2022. Additionally, Netflix released a documentary in 2022 covering the life and death of QuadrigaCX founder Gerald Cotten, who left users without access to millions of dollars worth of crypto.
